MacOS Mojave unveiled - Gets Dark Mode

macOS 10.14 getting dark mode, Apple News, and possibly cross-device apps Apple Announces ARKit 2, Measure App, USDZ File Format

While a first look at the next iOS update was what many were waiting for, a lot of the watchers expected Apple to give them a preview of what lies in store for the next macOS update for the iMac, MacBook and Mac Pro computing devices. The beta version will be available to developers today and to the public later this month.

One other new feature of MacOS Mojave is desktop stacks, which automatically categorizes files on the desktop into stacks which you can go through to declutter your Mac's desktop space. It is now possible to get a dark Menu bar and Dock in macOS High Sierra, but macOS Mojave extends the darker colors to all system apps and the overall UI. In order to add a file to the stack, you simply need to drag that file to the desktop. The second is Home, enabling Mac users to control their HomeKit accessories right from within their desktops. According to Federighi, what makes macOS special is that it's explicitly tailored for desktop, which is why Apple is instead choosing to allow developers to tailor their existing iOS apps for the Mac experience. The most notable update is the inclusion of a dark mode that darkens the interface of the Mac within apps like Mail, Photos, Pages, and more.

Following this, there is a new feature for the desktop known as Dynamic Desktop.

Apple is also implementing a new feature called stacks on the desktop. It's not just files of the same type that can be stacked - you can also group by date or by tag.

Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, demoed how the new ARKit 2 platform has improved tracking capabilities so that coders can build apps that can more realistically detail the real world.

On macOS Mojave, when you take a screenshot, it will appear in the lower right corner and when you click it, you will get that markup option.

Finder has a new gallery view where users can skim through files visually.

It now has a new viewing feature that will show a large preview of the file you have selected and you can activate a column on the side to view detailed information about the files, such as metadata. Safari now also automatically creates, autofills and stores strong passwords when users create new online accounts and flags reused passwords so users can change them. Quick Look has been updated as well with a similar Quick Actions set up to edit files without ever opening them. Voice Memos makes it easy to record personal notes, lectures, meetings, interviews and song ideas, and access them from iPhone, iPad or Mac. New developer frameworks for Mac Apps in late 2019 will broaden this to make it easier for third-party devs to bring apps to both iOS and Mac.

The company is also bringing a handful of previously iOS-limited applications to MacOS including News, Voice Memos, Home, and Stocks. One of the key features introduced in macOS Mojave is the "Dark Mode" alongside the "Stacks" feature and some new apps that were until now limited to iOS. New quick actions will also be available in Finder to help automate the creation of work documents and other projects. There are brand new tabs to Discover, Create, Work, Play, and Develop with curated app collections based on specific purposes.

It's been many years since the Mac App Store has been given some love, so it's fair to say this design overhaul is long overdue. With this announcement, Apple has literally enlarged the scope of macOS utility.
