Whittaker beats Romero in UFC fight of the year

Romero had just flattened Luke Rockhold in the UFC 221 main event. In the fifth, Romero controlled the round, bring down Whittaker with a series of left hands, then pounded with a right hand.

There is no word from the UFC if the fight will proceed and how the purses will be divided.

Join us from 10am Sunday (WST) as Australia's Robert Whittaker takes on Yoel Romero in a highly-anticipated UFC middlewight battle. "Absolutely it's on. (Romero) missed by 0.2 (lbs)", White said on the official weigh-in broadcast. Romero has a history of odd behavior, and missing weight for a championship fight felt like something that was right in his wheelhouse.

Romero was given an hour to lose the weight he needed but failed to make it for the UFC 225 event tomorrow. The most dominant round for either fighter was the first, where a botched throw by Arlovski ended up with the Australian landing in full mount.

The fight became a non-title main event, which meant Whittaker, plagued by injuries and thankful to return to the Octagon, lost an opportunity to notch his first UFC title defense.

The ringside doctor let Romero fight on, despite his eye, and it led to one of the most entertainingly brutal rounds of the year to date. Romero uncharacteristically held his hands up in guard for the majority of the round, content to sit back and let Whittaker bring the fight to him, which the champion did. He fought on the national wrestling scene for years before transitioning into MMA.

However, Whittaker posted to Twitter following the weigh-in, with his message all but confirming his intention to fight Romero. Whittaker would still have the belt, making him something of a lame duck champion.

Whittaker is 13-2 and has promised to go to the depths of exhaustion to take care of his Cuban rival at the United Centre in Chicago. Romero landed a couple harsh knees from behind, but Whittaker stalled Romero's progress and the referee separated them with about 25 seconds left in the fight. Romero swarmed and relentlessly punched Whittaker, who was on all-fours, just trying to survive.

If Romero had won, he would have a win over the champion. No promoter in their right mind would have enough trust in Romero to put him back in a title fight. "I'm refueling and getting ready for a fight".
