Owner of Vietnam eatery visited by Bourdain Obama in shock over chef’s death Anthony Bourdain, Chef And TV Personality, Dead At 61

The celebrity chef, known for his show Parts Unknown on CNN, was reportedly found dead in his hotel room near Strasbourg, in France.

After years in the restaurant industry, he was no stranger to the fact that US restaurant kitchens - among many other workplaces - survive and thrive on low-paid and exploited immigrant labor.

Tributes to Anthony Bourdain have been pouring in nonstop since it was announced that the beloved chef and TV host had passed away on Friday, with everyone from Toni Collette to Barack Obama expressing shock and paying their respects. "They were good friends", Karen Reynolds, director of CNN PR and longtime "Parts Unknown" publicist, told People.

But he thrived in restaurant kitchens, and that work led him to the Culinary Institute of America, where he graduated in 1978.

In a 2008 interview with The Associated Press, Bourdain had said his daughter's birth had changed his outlook on life: "I feel obliged to at least do the best I can and not do anything really stupidly self-destructive if I can avoid it".

Bolduan: "One of his friends described him to me as a freak of nature, a force of nature, unexplainable".

Suicide rates rose in almost every U.S. state from 1999 to 2016, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday. He was an outspoken critic of President Trump's immigration policies and a fierce defender of Hispanic workers.

Julian Medina, the owner of eight Mexican restaurants in NY, said he and Bourdain crossed paths a few times at industry events. "He supported that because he always worked beside a Latino and put Carlos in charge of his kitchen".

While in New York, Ms Hagerty met with the chef and a year later, published 100 of her reviews in a book that Bourdain edited. Friends of mine from the '70s and '80s, they just got off five, six, maybe 10 years ago. He told me that the greatest Brazilian chefs came from Minas Gerais, my home state. "The guy speaks like a bullet train with all the facts on his palm, delivering what we need to know precisely from his passion for Malaysian heritage cuisine".

Occasionally, Bourdain's penchant to spotlight minorities attracted a backlash.

"I ate at Johnny Rockets in an airport once and it opened up an abyss of depression and self-loathing, a spiral of self-hatred, rage, and despair that lasted weeks", he told the publication. Bourdain responded on Twitter, calling it "shameful, dishonest race-baiting click bait". Jason Wang, CEO of Xi'an Famous Foods in NY, planned to donate profits at all its locations on Friday to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Wang says Bourdain, who he affectionately calls "Tony", visited the basement restaurant for an episode of the Travel Channel's "No Reservations".

The bump in business was swift.

Tomorn said he only learned to know Bourdain through his words and regretted that he never had a chance to meet the late chef and author in person. I didn't talk to him this week but all I know was he was so happy last week.
