E3 2018: Halo Infinite revealed, but what is it?

The new studios will pump up the number of games available exclusively on Xbox, in a move addressing criticism that Microsoft has fallen behind its peers in launching innovative games for its console.

Microsoft also revealed several new Gears of War games. If you didn't manage to catch the show, you can catch all of the news right here. It did not reveal financial terms of the studio acquisitions.

With E3 2018 about to start in Los Angeles, major gaming publishers are holding pre-E3 press events before the video game trade show officially begins on Tuesday. You might have noticed that Master Chief's helmet looks a bit different, too, and this is meant to display the game's new art style. It seems that Microsoft is gearing up to tackle the massive success of Sony's (and Nintendo's for that matter) success with single-player games.

Microsoft purchased Ninja Theory (makers of Hellblade and Heavenly Sword), Forza Horizon developer Playground Games, Compulsion Games (creators of the upcoming We Happy Few) and State of Decay creator Undead Labs. Its investment into cloud-based gaming with Microsoft AI is interesting, with game streaming clearly high on its list of priorities. In Santa Monica, studio The Initiative will be lead by former Crystal Dynamics head of studio Darrell Gallagher.

It's no stretch to suggest that the Xbox One has been a beleaguered console that's really struggled since it launched.

But this wasn't Microsoft's only big news.

Why it matters: Microsoft's first party exclusives for Xbox has been lacking. It later said the game would be an open-world action RPG. Developed by 343 Industries and created with our new Slipspace Engine.

The last time we saw a proper game in the Halo series was with the fifth game, Guardians, about three years ago.
