Angela Merkel says climate change is ‘a fact,’ laments US stance

The leaders of Germany and France agreed Tuesday to create a Eurozone budget they hope will boost investment and provide a safety mechanism for the 19 nations using the euro currency, and also to seek a European solution to migration issues.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer is calling for Germany to turn back at its border migrants who have registered as asylum-seekers in other European countries.

Merkel is seeking an agreement at the European Union summit at the end of June which would make a ban on pre-registered migrants unnecessary.

Seehofer has been one of the fiercest critics of Merkel's liberal stance, under which over one million asylum seekers have been admitted into the country since 2015.

In this Wednesday, June 13, 2018 photo, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, right, talks to Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, left, prior to the weekly cabinet meeting at the chancellery in Berlin.

The sharp escalation of tensions between Merkel and her long-time Bavarian allies came with European Union nations once again at loggerheads over immigration, triggered by Italy's refusal this month to allow a rescue ship carrying 630 migrants to dock. The document, which has not yet been revealed to the public, reportedly envisages turning back certain categories of asylum seekers right at the German border as well as reduction of benefits for asylum seekers living in Germany.

Leaving aside the fact that Germany has vastly different immigration patterns than the US and a shorter history of welcoming immigrants, Mr. Trump's claim that crime is up in Germany is objectively false.

The immediate political issue for Merkel involves the right-wing Christian Social Union (CSU), a Bavarian party that is part of a coalition government with her center-right Christian Democrats (CDU).

He called out Germany in a tweet Monday, arguing the people there are beginning to turn against their leadership for allowing hundreds of thousands of refugees to flood into the country. Statistics from the Federal Ministry of the Interior show that 2017 saw the lowest number of crimes committed in Germany since 1992.

For the the Bavarian party, however, "the real dilemma they face is between accepting the bilateral deals Merkel brokers, or enforcing their plan unilaterally with the risk of Seehofer being fired". Instead, she wants to find a common European solution at the EU summit in Brussels.

Merkel told reporters she was still convinced that Europe needed to work together to combat the causes of the refugee flow by helping improve conditions in the countries of origin while at the same time increasing security at Europe's outer borders and cracking down on smugglers.

"We are, broadly speaking, opening a new chapter", Merkel said at a joint news conference with Macron after their meeting at Meseberg castle outside Berlin.

Merkel and Seehofer both argue that the law is on their side. She said her party will consider the results on July 1 "and decide how to proceed in light of what has been achieved".

"We just want to finally have a sustainable solution to send refugees back to the borders".

Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged to support Italy in tackling mass migration from outside the European Union during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Monday.
