While we'd love to give the Senegalese fans all the credit here, we're going to have to be a tiny bit selfish, and claim that we may have had a slight influence on them.

After the soccer teams' jobs were done in Saransk's Mordovia Arena, Japanese fans got to work cleaning up the stadium, reaching down under chairs and on the ground to pick up litter others had left behind.

On Tuesday, Senegal beat Poland 2-1 of their opening game in the World Cup finals. In the 2014 World Cup, Samurai Blue supporters brought big trash bags with them for use after the match with Colombia in Recife, Brazil.

Japan-based soccer journalist Scott McIntyre is following the team across Russian Federation, and told the BBC such cleanliness is to be expected from the fans. "An important aspect of Japanese society is making sure that everything is absolutely clean, and that's the case in all sporting events", sports reporter Scott McIntyre says. It is a habit drilled into citizens from a young age, with students expected to clean their school classrooms and hallways.

People on Twitter also praised their efforts.

After both teams did their country proud by winning their opening World Cup group games, the fans were filmed cleaning up after the separate victories.

The video clip of the dashing manager's fist-pumping celebration soon made it onto social media, where it has been hailed as "the meme of the 2018 World Cup".

Not only did these teams impress World Cup viewers - their fans did, too.

Japan and Senegal face each other in a Group H match on Sunday, June 24.
