Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose proposal for the global event won United Nations approval in 2014, led the way, performing his asanas with over 50,000 others in the northern city of Dehradun.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with around 50,000 yoga enthusiasts, kick-started India's International Yoga Day celebrations at Dehradun's Forest Research Institute.

On the occasion of fourth International Yoga Day, Chhattisgarh BJP Chief Minister Raman Singh lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating yoga internationally, which is extremely creditable.

"The world has embraced yoga and proof of this can been seen in how the International Yoga Day has been marked", the Prime Minister said, adding that "Yoga is lovely because it is ancient yet modern, constant yet evolving". The way to lead a calm, creative and content life is yoga. The Prime Minister reached the venue a little after 6:30 am, addressed the gathering and performed yoga along with those assembled there. Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said yoga reflects India's "soft power" globally.

Yoga "is enriching millions of lives all over the world", Modi said in a speech.

The Prime Minister said that yoga is one of the most precious gifts and termed it is "ancient yet modern". Chandigarh was the host city for the main event in 2016 and the main event for the first International Yoga Day celebrations was New Delhi.

"Its impact has expanded far beyond its day of observance", he said, adding that across nations, the day has become an occasion for initiations of millions of people inspired by the spirit of yoga, who commit themselves to its pursuit. "Instead of increasing suffering, Yoga heals", he added. It has the best of our past and presents and a ray of hope for our future. "Instead of dividing, Yoga unites".

"The gems of India's unique heritage, such as yoga, will be respected by the world at large only when we ourselves respect our culture and traditions", he said. Breath is the most handsome gift and yoga makes people realize that. Making June 21 a remarkable day is a big achievement for the country.

Yoga is an art which connects our soul, mind and body.

In another event held organized by the Indian Embassy on June 19, 2018 hundreds of people including representatives from, Yoga associations, officials from the embassy, film personalities like Malina Joshi (also Miss Nepal 2011), friendship societies and school children participated in the camp enthusiastically. Nor is yoga only what you practice in the morning.
