Apple and Samsung have finally settled a seven-year-long patent dispute, bringing to an end the long-running battle over the design of their rival smartphones.

"They have agreed to drop [the lawsuits] and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in this matter", District Court Judge Lucy Koh announced today.

"We're grateful to the jury for their service and pleased they agree that Samsung should pay for copying our products", it added. The settlement terms were not included in the document, however.

But when the case went back to lower court for trial this year, the jury sided with Apple's argument that, in this specific case, Samsung's profits were attributable to the design elements that violated Apple's patents. The case originally started in 2011.

The document doesn't specify the terms of the settlement, so it's unclear if Samsung agreed to pay the $539 million it was supposed to, or if a different agreement was reached.

Apple senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi speaks at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose, California, US, June 4, 2018. "This case has always been about more than money".

Samsung had previously paid Apple $548 million, of which $399 million was for products that infringed the design patents plus more for infringing a utility patent that was not at issue in the retrial, according to a Bloomberg report. Apple was awarded $539 million in May by a U.S. jury; prior to the award, Samsung had already paid Apple $399 million, so Samsung had an outstanding payment of $140 million, according to Reuters. The dispute costed both companies billions of Ringgit in litigation costs and penalties over the years, but it also changed the way patent laws worked in the US. Apple was originally awarded $1 billion in damages, but a series of appeals pushed the ruling all the way to the Supreme Court.
