The initial numbers given were almost 450 flights cancelled and 75,000 travellers affected.

Jetstar says: "Due to a volcanic ash cloud caused by Mount Agung in Bali, it is now not safe to operate flights to or from Denpasar Airport".

Airlines cancelled mostly worldwide flights after the closure on Thursday, affecting more than 8000 passengers affected.

Mt Agung caused widespread disruptions towards the end of 2017, throwing the travel plans of thousands of holidaymakers into chaos.

An earlier flight on AirAsia was called off before the airport was shuttered early Friday morning.

A change in wind direction pushed the ash away from Bali's global gateway, allowing flights to resume, an airport official said.

Bali's main worldwide gateway will be closed until at least Friday evening, according to officials who spoke to AFP news agency.

Activity at the volcano was high last year and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, but it had been quieter this year.

The volcano has turned active again after a lull since past year, forcing out a thick column of ash and smoke, leaving no option for the authorities but to close the global airport. This incident has left thousands for travellers stranded, affecting around 75000 people.

Another two Jetstar flights to Denpasar from Perth and Sydney were turned back.

Bali's governor said officials were working on getting visitors on their way. Authorities lowered its alert status from the highest level in February.

A danger zone has been set in a 4km area surrounding the volcano's crater and some 300 local residents from around the mountain were evacuated voluntarily.

Agung has been erupting periodically since it rumbled back to life previous year. Mount Agung is about 70km northeast of Bali's tourist hotspot of Kuta.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 250 million people, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
