Almost 600 women dressed in white and seated on the floor of the Hart Senate office building were arrested by Capitol Police on Thursday.

Cheered on by some Democratic lawmakers who walked among them, the women said they were pushed to the protest by President Trump's zero tolerance policy which sparked separations of children from their parents. Actress Susan Sarandon (inset) was also involved in the protest - organized by two liberal groups, Women's March and the Center for Popular Democracy.

The nationwide day of protest was originally created to protest President Donald Trump's policy of separating parents from their children as they awaited prosecution after crossing into the US illegally. Gillibrand said, adding the protests were an "amazing" act of defiance against the Trump administration.

Protesters in the Hart Senate Office Building unfurled banners that read: "End all detention camps" and "Families belong together in freedom".

Congresswoman Jayapal tweeted a video of the protest with the caption, "Today's action is a mass protest, risking arrest, by powerful women, and I'm proud to be a part of it".

"People across my state of NY, all across the country are furious with this administration's policy to separate children from their parents", Sen.

And dozens of protesters shut down a government meeting in MI in protest against a contract with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency to house detainees at a local jail.

Senator Elizabeth Warren cheers on demonstrators.

The crowd then marched down to the federal premises, where they occupied the atrium and several floors, chanting "we care" and "where are the children?" in reference to minors separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border.

In all, Capitol police arrested at least 575 women for the misdemeanor offense of unlawfully demonstrating in the Capitol. They were processed on the scene and released. So did the Democrats Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Edward Markey of MA.
