The road to confirmation for Trump's pick is likely to be a contentious one, as Democrats are expected to push back.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has committed to confirming a nominee in the fall, which the Republican-controlled Senate should be able to do if McConnell can hold his razor-thin majority together.
Trump met on Thursday with senators from both parties at the White House to discuss the court vacancy created by the retirement of Kennedy, which was announced on Wednesday.
"We'd be very happy if he'd pick any name on that list", said Severino. The Supreme Court is now less seen as a final interpreter of our laws and arbiter of the Constitution but rather as just another political battleground.
Senate Democrats are calling to delay the vote until after the midterm elections, but McConnell has rejected their call and there is little Democrats can do to ultimately delay a vote.
