The heat-related death toll continues to rise across Quebec as Environment Canada issues a smog and heat warning for today.

"We really hope that the next information we have to give out is the last and total number of deaths for this heat wave".

The steamy conditions that have prevailed in Central and Eastern Canada for several days have contributed to 33 deaths in Quebec, health officials said Thursday.

Montreal's health department reported 18 deaths, seven were reported in the Eastern Townships, six were reported in the Mauricie-Centre-du-Québec region, Montérégie's public health department reported two and one more was reported in Laval.

"The level of danger remains high, despite a decrease in humidity level",- said the representative of service of emergency Canada Stefan Oberhoff.

Across southern Quebec, public officials have been urging citizens to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses while, at the same time, keeping an eye on friends, family and neighbours.

The heat wave is expected to end by Thursday evening with temperatures between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius over the next few days.

Meanwhile, a risky heat wave is expected to grip California and parts of the southwest Friday and into the weekend, threatening millions of people and likely fueling existing wildfires in the United States.

"If you know people with respiratory problems or people who are elderly, don't hesitate to visit them or give them a phone call to see if they need anything", she said at a committee meeting.

On Friday, provincial officials said 54 people had died province-wide, but they could not immediately be reached for updated numbers on Saturday.
