Scotland Yard said they have launched a murder investigation - the second major probe involving the nerve agent this year, following the case of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in March.

Dawn Sturgess, 44, and her partner Charlie Rowley were found unconscious last week, a few kilometres from the scene of a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy and his daughter in March.

A man named as Charlie Rowley, 45, also fell ill at the weekend and he remains in a critical condition.

On Wednesday scientists at Porton Down confirmed the pair had been exposed to Novichok, but its still not know if it's the same batch that poisoned former Russian spy, Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury four months ago.

Met Police assistant commissioner Neil Basu said: "This is shocking and tragic news".

Police say the nerve agent that sickened Rowley and Sturgess was the same type that nearly killed the Skripals, but scientists haven't been able to tell whether it was from the same batch.

Russian Federation has reportedly denied involvement in both incidents.

She offered her condolences to the relatives and loved ones of Sturgess, 44, who had three children.

But, they say, "it is important that the investigation is led by the evidence available and the facts alone". Sturgess was taken to hospital around 10.15am and Rowley several hours later, around 3.30pm.

Mr Rowley remains critically ill in hospital.

"The Government is committed to providing full support to the local community as it deals with this tragedy", she wrote in a second tweet.

The death of Sturgess was being investigated as a murder, police said in a statement.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Theresa May said she was "appalled and shocked" by Sturgess' death.

She said: "The staff here at Salisbury District Hospital worked tirelessly to save Dawn".

The Skripals were released from hospital but the investigation into the attack on them continues.

Britain's public health authority acknowledged on Friday the concerns of people living in the area after the two incidents involving Novichok, but said it was confident that the risk to the public remained low.

Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, almost died of exposure to Novichok left on the front doorstep of Sergei's home in March.
