May 2017: The Supreme Court upholds the high court's decision to give them death sentences.

Meanwhile residents of Medawara Kalan, the native village of the victim in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday demanded immediate hanging of those convicted of her rape and murder, as a wave of happiness erupted after the Supreme Court dismissed the review pleas.

"This is the first verdict after the new law came into force".

The young woman's parents, Asha Devi and Badrinath Singh, applauded the court's decision but said that they have been waiting too long for a resolution.

The accused had then put up a clever masquerade with three of them posing as passengers in the bus when the victim and her friend, who were trying to get to Dwarka, were lured into the bus by the juvenile at the Munirka bus stop.

The victim's mother, who was present in the court when the order was announced, said she hopes the convicts are hanged "as soon as possible".

A panel entrusted with reviewing legislation boosted the jail terms to 20 years for rape despite rejecting public appeals for the death penalty. "What has happened between the confirmation of death sentence and now - there is no diminution of sexual violence against women", Grower said.

"Even after the Nirbhaya incident, so many women were raped and killed barbarically".

Rights activists, opposed to death penalty, said execution will not eradicate violence against women.

The gang rape sparked demonstrations attended by tens of thousands of people in Delhi and across India, which led to harsher sentences for sex crimes, including the death penalty.

"Instead, the government must allocate adequate resources for effective implementation of laws, to improve the conviction rate and ensure certainty of justice in all cases", Asmita Basu, Amnesty International India's Programmes director, said.

On September 13, a fast-track court sentenced Mukesh, Akshay, Vinay and Pawan to death.

On 16 December 2012, the six convicts raped and brutalised the student in a moving bus she had boarded in South Delhi with a male friend.

It all started on the fateful day of December 16, 2012, when the four appellants along with the main accused late Ram Singh and the juvenile accused took out a bus for a "joyride" as was the routine on Sunday evenings.

She was also severely assaulted before being thrown out on the road.
