The Trump Presidency: Trump is due to announce pick for Supreme Court

Pres. Trump: 'Very Close' To Making Final Supreme Court Pick Will Sean Hannity and Donald Trump's Sister Decide This Supreme Court Candidate's Fate?

A senior White House official said Trump made his final decision on the nomination Sunday evening, then phoned Kavanaugh to inform him. Kavanaugh's many written opinions provide insight into his thinking and also will be fodder for Senate Democrats who will seek to block his confirmation.

Watch CBN News' FAITH NATION's coverage of the president's announcement.

During an appearance on MetroNews "Talkline", Capito said she wants Trump to nominate a judge similar to Gorsuch, who she voted to confirm a year ago.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of CT, a member of the Judiciary Committee, said the president "outsourced" his decision to the conservative Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation, which first helped Trump compile a list of 25 prospective Supreme Court justices during the 2016 campaign. He is among the best and brightest jurists on the appellate courts with a reputation of being fair and impartial in his decisions.

Trump plans to unveil his choice on television Monday at 9 p.m.

"It's going to happen pretty swiftly", said Amanda Hollis-Brusky, a political scientist at Pomona College in California who has written a book on the conservative legal movement. She needs to make it through a closed primary, in which only Republicans can vote, for her reelection bid in 2020, making opposing Trump risky.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, March 2, 2017, about news reports of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' contact with Russia's ambassador to the U.S. during the presidential campaign.

While certainly conservative, Judge Kavanaugh is well within the mainstream of American legal thought and theory.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump cross the South Lawn upon arrival at the White House on July 8, 2018 in Washington, D.C. They see Trump and McConnell's revamping of the courts — in the face of Democratic filibusters that stall even popular nominees — as more important than even legislative victories.

MCCAMMON: Well, near the top of the potentially-tough-to-confirm list would be Brett Kavanaugh. "A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law", he said. "We have a track record of making sure the voices of the American people are heard in the corridors of power".

Liberal groups have geared up to protect Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that upheld women's rights to an abortion, from being overturned.

Schumer and other Democrats have cited campaign statements Trump made to assert that any of the candidates Trump mulled would oppose abortion rights and the Obama-era health care law.

Earlier, Trump had announced he had narrowed his choice to several contenders, building anticipation for the announcement, which generated criticism.

"In keeping with President Reagan's legacy, I do not ask about a nominee's personal opinions". He also praised Kennedy. Kennedy ruled multiple times in favor of abortion rights during his 30-year Supreme Court tenure. The framers established that the Constitution is created to secure the blessings of liberty.

McConnell reportedly told Trump that Kavanaugh, a former assistant and staff secretary to former President George W. Bush, has an extensive paper trail that could help Democrats prolong the nomination process.

Casey's opposition extends to Fox Chapel's Thomas M. Hardiman, who sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Some conservatives have questioned his commitment to social issues like abortion. That list included two people with Alabama ties: justices Kevin Newsom and William "Bill" Pryor of Alabama, both with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11 Circuit. He launched a career that veered into Washington politics, including work on President George W. Bush's legal team for the 2000 presidential election recount in Florida. If he is confirmed, it will mark the first time ever that a current or former Supreme Court justice has two former clerks become justices, according to an article by Adam Feldman, who writes a blog about the Supreme Court.
