Trump picks Kavanaugh for Supreme Court

Outside candidate for Supreme Court buoyed by McConnell's backing Trump still pondering Supreme Court pick as big reveal nears

The coming battle over a Supreme Court nominee promises to be a bruising one. Add Supreme Court as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Supreme Court news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says by picking Kavanaugh, Trump is delivering on his pledge to "punish" women for their choices.

Like the other eight justices on the court, Kavanaugh has an Ivy League law degree, spending his undergraduate and law school years at Yale. "The stakes are simply too high for anything less", Schumer said in a statement.

The confirmation process promises to be a fight, and Republicans have a narrow 51-49 majority - with nearly no room to lose votes as Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona remains absent while fighting brain cancer.

Trump called Kavanaugh "one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time", saying he is "considered a judge's judge and a true thought leader among his peers".

Approximately 56 percent of Trump voters maintain his Supreme Court appointments were the most important factor.

He's expected to meet with Kavanaugh on Tuesday. Those issues will be central to a heated fight among Democrats to persuade moderate Republicans and moderates in their own party to oppose Kavanaugh.

That means Kavanaugh is not a stranger to tough confirmation fights. It is unclear whether Senator John McCain, a Republican, will vote as he is undergoing brain cancer treatment.

"Judge Kavanaugh has the qualifications that make him immensely qualified to take a seat on the highest court in the land".

On average, for Supreme Court nominees who have received hearings, the hearing occurred 39 days after the nomination was formally submitted, according to the Congressional Research Service. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, have expressed concerns about a justice whose confirmation would threaten Roe v. Wade.

The drama-focused president is going to announce his choice for the Kennedy seat in a Monday night address to the country at 9 p.m.

Three vulnerable red state Democratic senators will be ones to watch in the weeks ahead.

Meanwhile, three Democratic senators, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, all face reelection in the fall in states Trump won.

Republicans may have a narrower margin for error than they did when the Senate confirmed Trump's first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, by a vote of 54-45 in April 2017. "Vulnerable senators up for reelection this year have a choice: Stand with the president and their constituents ... or cave to pressure from the extreme abortion lobby".

Trump signed Kavanaugh's nomination papers Monday evening in the White House residence. All of the folks that you mentioned have strong histories of making decisions in opposition to abortion access.

The Times also reported that McConnell did not "want to draw the ire" of Paul over Kavanaugh's role in crafting Bush-era policies. In her statement, she said President Trump's nomination was a "destructive tool on a generation of progress for workers, women, LGBTQ people, communities of color and families" and that it was to "radically reverse the course of American justice and democracy". I will take the same approach as I have previously for a Supreme Court vacancy.

Though unconfirmed, the four judges up for consideration are believed to be Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman. "My position does not change with the naming of a nominee today".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, who once held a court seat open for almost a year before the 2016 election to keep former President Barack Obama from filling it, lambasted Democrats for announcing their opposition before Trump had decided on a nominee.
