Democrats responded with a call to bring back before the committee former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who was not forced to answer certain questions.

"Like many people, I had and expressed personal political opinions during an extraordinary presidential election. opinions that were not always expressed in terms I am proud of", he said.

A New Jersey Democratic congresswoman interrupted House Oversight Committee Chariman Trey Gowdy of SC, telling him he was "out of control" at FBI Agent Peter Strzok's hearing.

The idea that Strzok or others in the FBI were so biased against Trump that they worked to undermine his election laughable because the bureau kept its investigation into Trump's campaign and ties to Russian Federation a secret.

In his most direct defense of the controversial texts, Strzok said he had written them "off-the-cuff" and that it was important to view them in the context of the heated election in 2016, during which Trump engaged in numerous outrageous, racially-charged feuds - including with the family of Muslim U.S. Army captain who was killed in Iraq in 2004. He told Gohmert the fact that he would say that "shows more what you stand for" than anything else.

Thursday's hearing, which was the first public appearance Strzok has made since he became a central figure in the Russian Federation investigation, underscored the deep tensions on Capitol Hill over the FBI's investigations connected to the 2016 election.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter said in a tweet:"I hope lots of Americans are watching the Strzok hearings".

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., took his five minutes to force Strzok to read some of his own texts - including ones that used vulgarities. And FBI Counsel has instructed him not to answer the question.

On Friday, Page will sit down with the House Judiciary and House Oversight and Government Reform Committees, which have sought her testimony for seven months.

Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who represents Trenton, Princeton and Old Bridge, interrupted Gowdy and said Strzok is the one testifying, not the former Greenville prosecutor.

The ranking Democrat on the panel, Jerrold Nadler of NY, urged Republicans not to use the Strzok hearing to attack special counsel Robert Mueller. Goodlatte eventually let the hearing proceed without calling the panel into recess.

Peter Strzok, who helped lead FBI investigations into Hillary Clinton's email use and potential coordination between Russian Federation and Donald Trump's campaign, was testifying publicly for the first time since being removed from special counsel Robert Mueller's team following the discovery of the derogatory text messages previous year.

Strzok was asked if he ever thought of recusing himself from the investigation.

The DOJ's inspector general concluded in a report released last month that department officials committed numerous indiscretions over the course of the Trump campaign investigation in 2016. Strzok says he never allowed personal opinions to taint his work.

Strzok appeared before the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees Thursday, where he was grilled by lawmakers over anti-Trump text messages he sent to attorney Lisa Page.

"The special counsel has now obtained five guilty pleas and indicted 18 others, including some of President Trump's closest advisers - referencing posters that included retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn who resigned and pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation". Both worked on the FBI investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's emails and later special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. As the hearing began, Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings had staffers hold up large signs of people who have pleaded guilty in Mueller's probe.
