The 12 boys who were trapped in a cave in northern Thailand for nearly three weeks paid tribute to the Navy SEAL who lost his life during the rescue operation.

The Mu Pa Academy boys were shocked and saddened when told of the death of a former Navy SEAL during the recent marathon operation to rescue them from the flooded Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district.

The search for the boys and the daring operation to rescue them caught the attention of wide audiences across the globe and the drama has now inadvertently come to focus on the plight of almost half a million people in Thailand who are stateless.

The boys and their coach were part of a youth soccer team.

The 12 boys and their coach entered the cave on June 23 and were unable to escape after heavy rain flooded the tunnels unexpectedly.

Meanwhile on the ground, the Thais and worldwide community sent in swarms of men and women to provide everything from catering, communications, media and of course the huge teams of workers filling the cave with tonnes and tonnes of equipment to try and lower the water and sustain the diving operations.

They would like them to get a month of relaxation and recovery at home with family and friends - and do not want any of the boys or family members to conduct media interviews out of fear that would cause them to feel guilt or shame.

The boys are recuperating from their ordeal in Chiang Rai hospital, apparently in good spirits with doctors on Friday saying they were sleeping and eating well and able to receive visits from close relatives.

All will be discharged from hospital in the northern town of Chiang Rai on Thursday, he said.

Despite the heightened interest and pressure, the boys need to live as normally as possible, said Dr. Andrea Danese of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College in London. The messages were similar, with each of the boys saying they were well and thanking rescuers.

Incredible footage caught the moment Mr Stanton discovered the group, who at the time had been trapped inside the flooded cave for nine days with little food and water.

The boys and their 25-year-old coach were freed over three days last week, bringing to an end a complex rescue mission involving hundreds of experts from across the world.

The boys, young as they were, also showed courage and resilience in the face of danger and adversity.

The post has received more than 50,000 comments and likes with one Thai person telling Dr Harris his father "was the proudest father in the world on his last day". He has been raised as a national hero following the successful rescue of all 13 people trapped inside over two weeks.

The rescue was greeted with joy by some of the world's biggest soccer clubs.

She has been helping Rick and the other divers throughout the rescue operation.

In the area in northern Thailand around the cave, which remains closed, more than 4,000 volunteers were reported to have taken part Saturday in trying to restore the landscape.

Authorities have closed the cave for now but hope to reopen it later as a tourist attraction - with sufficient safeguards in place to make sure no one gets trapped again.
