Charm offensive after no-holds-barred attack by Rahul Gandhi

PM Narendra Modi Urges MPs to Rise to the Occasion Ahead of No Confidence Motion in Lok Sabha PM Modi addressing the press outside the Parliament on Day 1 of Monsoon Session

The Congress, the main opposition party which voted in favour of the TDP-sponsored motion last night, has now lost trust of people, he said.

Gandhi accused the Modi government of buying 36 Rafael fighter aircraft from France at a highly inflated price - almost triple the price being negotiated when Congress was in power before Modi became prime minister in 2014.

The Congress's charge was led by President Rahul Gandhi, who attacked the government over demonetisation, women's safety in India, GST and the Rafale deal.

Contradicting Rahul Gandhi's claims, the France government had stated, "They have noted the statement of Rahul Gandhi before the Indian Parliament".

"As per article 10 of the Inter Governmental Agreement (IGA) between India and France, on purchase of Rafale aircraft, protection of classified information and materials exchanged under IGA shall be governed by provisions of security agreement signed on January 25, 2008", she said. "I didn't like it too", the Speaker said.

"The Defence Minister has spoken "untruth".The French prime minister has personally told me that there is no secret pact between the Indian and the French governments", Gandhi said demanding that the Prime Minister must answer why this contract was given to a particular businessman after taking it away from the Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd". They should know that nobody can make someone sit or leave. But, I want to say this from the bottom of my heart that I am very grateful to the Prime Minister, the BJP and the RSS. "Farmers are unhappy because prices of fertilisers and seeds have increased while the youth have no employment", he said. But the Congress President bent over, threw his arms around Modi and hugged him tight.

The third Lok Sabha, from 1962 to 1967 saw three Prime Ministers: Nehru, Shastri and Gandhi.

Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, also took to Twitter to appreciate Gandhi's speech and jaw-dropping hugging gesture.

This is truth, he is not a "chowkidar" but a "bhagidaar" (collaborator), he said. "But I will turn this anger into love because I am the Congress", he said. "This wasn't a hug, but a shock to Modi", he said, adding that there would be more tremors like today for the BJP. With a central image of the hug, the daily highlighted both the Opposition's complaints as well as the government's responses. "We will do everything possible for the development of the states", he said while replying to the debate on the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha.

During the morning session the opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi unleashed a scathing attack on the PM and the BJP bringing in demonitisation, GST, the Rafale deal and the widespread lynching of people who oppose them in the country.

An irked BJP has moved a privilege motion against the Congress President for levelling "baseless allegations" against the government on the Rafale deal and misleading the Parliament.
