U.S. President Donald Trump, left, and Russian President Vladimir Putin leave after a press conference after their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, Finland, Monday, July 16, 2018.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., who recently returned from a visit to Moscow, warned that "the Russians are very prepared to argue on so many issues that they're not in the wrong".

Newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda dismissed the US investigation into Trump's "mythical work for the Kremlin", and praised Trump for meeting Putin "despite opposition from his own elite and the hysterics of the media". In an interview with CBS, which aired on Sunday, Trump likened the European Union to China and Russian Federation as America's economic adversaries.

The White House said Trump would meet with members of Congress on Tuesday.

Trump quickly added, "If they had it, it would've been out by now".

The European Union and the United States are best friends, and saying the two are foes was "fake news", European Council President Donald Tusk said on Sunday, after U.S. President Donald Trump had called the EU a foe on trade matters.

"To me, it's the only question that interests the American press", reporter Yegor Kolyvanov said on NTV, a Kremlin-controlled national TV channel.

Trump also refrained from publicly criticizing Russia's 2014 seizure of Ukraine's Crimea region, another geopolitical win for Putin against Western efforts to isolate him.

Putin has repeatedly denied any knowledge of interference in the US election.

The Russian Foreign Ministry responded: "We agree".

But Trump says in a tweet that he's received "many calls from leaders of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries" thanking him for helping "to get them focused on financial obligations, both present & future".

And at this point, USA sanctions against Russian Federation over the annexation still remain in place, many of them dating back to the Obama administration in 2014.

The president also tells CBS News that he "hadn't thought" about asking Putin to extradite the dozen Russian military intelligence officers indicted this past week in Washington on charges related to the hacking of Democratic targets in the 2016 USA election, but says that "certainly I'll be asking about it". On Sunday, Trump tweeted that the news media and Democrats won't be satisfied with any outcome of the summit.

"I think the probe is a disaster for our country", Trump said.

Putin dismissed the idea during a post-summit news conference, though he did not explicitly deny it.

"Russia, If you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing", Trump said that day.

As criticism mounted, Trump tweeted from Air Force One on his way home from Finland that he had "GREAT confidence in MY intelligence people".

Anti-Trump protesters gathered in Helsinki's Senate Square and marched through the Finnish capital and ended their demonstration at the square. One protester held a sign that read, "Build saunas not war!"

From an opening words standpoint, the president should speak first and know exactly what he is going to say. In a CBS interview over the weekend, Trump drew little distinction between Western democracies that share history and values with the United States and authoritarian regimes in Moscow and Beijing.
