Arizona Trans Woman: CVS Pharmacist Refused to Fill My Hormone Prescription

Arizona Trans Woman: CVS Pharmacist Refused to Fill My Hormone Prescription Arizona Trans Woman: CVS Pharmacist Refused to Fill My Hormone Prescription

A CVS pharmacist in Arizona was sacked after he refused to fill the hormone prescription of a transgender woman.

In a blog post published on the ACLU of Arizona's website, Hall wrote: "After years of working to affirm my identity in a world where transgender people are questioned constantly about how well they know themselves, the pharmacist refused to fill one of the prescriptions needed to affirm my identity".

"On a recent day in April, I left my doctor's office elated". I was carrying my first prescriptions for hormone therapy. Hall had just left the doctor's office eager to receive the medication that she said would finally "affirm my identity".

A transgender woman is speaking out after she said a CVS pharmacist denied her hormone prescription.

Hall wrote that she's lucky that her family and friends accept and support who she is.

Hall says she later called her doctor's office, who tried to intervene and get the prescription filled, but the pharmacist refused once again.

Hall has filed a complaint with the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.

CVS apologized in a statement given to CNN.

A CVS spokesperson, Michael J. DeAngelis, said in a statement Friday that the pharmacist's conduct "does not reflect our values or our commitment to inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care".

It was the second recent controversial incident to take place in a Phoenix-area pharmacy.

The pharmacist violated company policies against denying patients access to medication prescribed by a physician based on a pharmacist's individual religious or moral beliefs, CVS Health spokesman Mike DeAngelis said Sunday.

The apology came just weeks after a Walgreens pharmacist in Peoria, Arizona, refused to give a woman her miscarriage medication.

Joshua Block, senior staff attorney for the ACLU LGBT & HIV Project, said given the current political climate, it's critical that CVS ensures its customers are not harassed in its pharmacies.

Arizona is one of at least six states that allows pharmacies and druggists to refuse to fill a prescription on religious or moral grounds.

But Steve Kilar, spokesperson for the ACLU of Arizona, told Rewire.News that "the Arizona law that allows pharmacists to refuse service to customers pertains only to abortion and emergency contraception medicine, which is not what Hilde was seeking". 'I felt like the pharmacist was trying to out me as transgender in front of strangers'. Hall said a local Walgreens eventually filled the prescription.

She claims the pharmacist loudly questioned her in front of other customers and rejected her and her doctor's requests to transfer the prescription to another location.

"I have contacted CVS' corporate complaint line multiple times, but no one has addressed my concerns or offered me an apology", she wrote.

Meanwhile, those in the LGBTQ community say it's a step in the right direction, but sadly the pharmacist's actions were not surprising.

Walgreens policy requires pharmacists who morally object to filling a prescription to refer it to another pharmacist or manager "in a timely manner", which Arteaga's pharmacist did not do.

An example of sex discrimination, according to an Obama administration training guide issued in 2016, would be a pharmacist not providing a flu vaccine to a woman and questioning her on her non-gender-conforming appearance.
