After criticism, Trump delays second Putin meeting to next year

Russia's President Vladimir Putin offers a After criticism, Trump delays second Putin meeting to next year

In a statement released by the state department, the USA secretary of state said the U.S. will hold on to its long-standing principle of refusing to recognise Kremlin claims of sovereignty over territory seized by force, in violation of global law.

Moscow made Crimea part of Russian Federation after a hastily conducted referendum whose results were rejected by the global community.

Pompeo's statement came shortly before he appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to answer lawmakers' questions about an array of global issues.

The theory that Vladimir Putin has a tender, nearly fatherly interest in the political well-being of his friend Donald Trump received fresh validation today when the Kremlin deflected Trump's odd public invitation for a second summit meeting in Washington this fall.

"A disgrace to America", Trump tweeted Monday.

In prepared remarks, Pompeo said the US goal in dealing with Moscow is "to steadily raise the costs of aggression until Vladimir Putin chooses a less confrontational foreign policy, while keeping the door open for dialogue in our national interest".

In the interview, Pompeo acknowledged that he was not in the room when Trump and Putin met for almost two hours in Helsinki.

The US administration stepped up its damage-control operation and on Wednesday also delayed a second summit with the Kremlin chief until next year.

In often testy exchanges with senators, Pompeo listed actions by the Trump administration against Russian Federation, including what he said were over 200 sanctions against Moscow.

They strongly rebuked Trump's comments during a joint press conference in Helsinki when he stood beside Putin and denied USA intelligence findings that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election.

Democrats went further, questioning whether Mr. Trump was striking deals to surrender hard-won USA positions.

Rubio is part of the Senate Intelligence Committee and urges the U.S.to prevent future attacks from Russian intelligence, citing that the discoveries made by Robert Mueller and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are "100 percent accurate".

"The president. will be their toughest enemy, most hard enemy", he said.

Pompeo, whom Democrats accused of playing politics with the investigation into the 2012 attack on US facilities in Benghazi, Libya, accused Menendez of pursuing a "political soliloquy" but then declined the opportunity to respond. "We can report tonight that the White House video of that exchange has also skillfully cut out that question from the Reuters reporter as if it didn't happen", she said.

Democrats have gone further, with some suggesting the meeting and Mr. Trump's words amounted to "treason" for accepting Mr. Putin's claims Russian Federation didn't interfere in the 2016 election. Just 8 percent of Americans said the president is too tough on Russian Federation, and that idea received weak support, regardless of where the respondent fell on the political spectrum.

"I'm very concerned that Russian Federation will be fighting very hard to have an impact on the upcoming Election". "They definitely don't want Trump!"

The remarks and Trump's overall performance - both at the Helsinki meeting with Putin and during the two-day North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels the previous week - stunned diplomatic, security and intelligence experts in the USA and around the world.
