Toronto Chief of Police, Mark Saunders said a girl aged 10-years and a young woman of 18-years were killed in the shooting that took place at Greektown (Danforth) neighbourhood in the city, while at least 13 others were left injured. Thirteen others were wounded, some suffering potentially life-altering injuries.

Hussain's family, in a wrenching statement released through a third party hard upon the heels of the SIU announcement of the gunman's identity, portrayed their son as in the grips of untreatable and severe mental illness for "his entire life".

Toronto police say they have no information that he has traveled overseas recently. Hussain, who was 29, was born in Canada, said people who knew the family.

Yet if the truth is out there, and it may not be, it probably lies as it often does in the murky middle. Residents of the neighborhood said Hussain's family has suffered other tragedies in recent years, including the death of Hussain's sister from a vehicle crash.

Saunders said officials will continue to explore every investigative avenue, including interviews and reviewing the online activity and mental health experiences of dead gunman Faisal Hussain.

Fiaz Khan also said Hussain was a regular sight around the building, but did not mingle with fellow residents to the same degree as his well-liked parents.

"You've heard me ask the question of why anybody would need to buy 10 or 20 guns, which they can lawfully do under the present laws", he continued.

Hussain was found dead near the scene of the shooting after an exchange of gunfire with police.

Hussain did not have a criminal record and his prior contact with police did not involve a risk to public safety, according to Toronto police spokesman Meaghan Gray. It is now illegal to possess an unregistered handgun or any kind of rapid-fire weapon.

A post-mortem on Hussain will be conducted on Tuesday.

A police source also told the CBC that a subsequent search of Hussain's Thorncliffe Park apartment uncovered an assault rifle along with ammunition and a high-capacity magazine.

"People should rely on the information that is going to be forthcoming over time, including today, from the Toronto Police Service", he said.

Where then does that leave those who wish to point to a cause or explanation for Hussain's actions, if only to confirm some belief or bias or fear of their own?

Police have revealed that Hussain was obsessed with explosions and death, with a passion for replica handguns. Does he probably know Muslim extremists?

Ensaf Haider, the Canadian wife of a Saudi-held political prisoner, tweeted: "Politically correct reporters keep saying murderer Faisal Hussain suffered 'mental illness.' Which Islamic terrorist was NOT mentally ill?" Yeah, probably. Does he have access to guns from the guys in his neighbourhood?

Ashley Robinson saw Faisal Hussain nearly every day when she walked her dog on the winding sidewalk near her high-rise apartment building in Toronto. And that, for all the shades of grey that constitute the human animal, is now the ghastly central fact of his life.

He was sweet to people in his building's elevators, shy but nice.
