The forecaster said thunder and lightning, "torrential rain", "large hail" and flooding could occur as the stormy conditions spread into the north-east.

However, temperatures today are expected to peak above 30°C again, before dipping overnight.

Temperatures are forecast to be in the mid-30s for much of east and south-east England, reaching 37C in London, and could rise higher still if there is a lot of sunshine, Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said high temperatures in hospitals were leaving nurses exhausted, sick and dizzy.

Amid tinderbox conditions, 56 fires were reported on grass verges next to England's motorways and a combine harvester caught alight in Nottinghamshire, scorching a field.

The Environmental Audit Committee also encouraged employers to relax dress codes, allow flexible working during warm weather and changing building regulations to prevent people from overheating.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Yorkshire and the Humber, as thunderstorms are expected to hit between 2pm and 11.45pm on Friday July 27.

Edinburgh's soaring temperatures (peaking at 26C) will drop down to around 20C tonight as cloud cover rolls over the clear skies.

The Met Office says temperatures will keep rising into Friday and the UK's all-time temperature record of 38.5C (101F) - set in Kent in August 2003 - could be beaten.

"Large hail and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards". Heavy rain and thunderstorms in the small hours of tomorrow will continue to bring the temperature down, making for a slightly cooler and rainy weekend in the capital, with some sunny intervals.

Where the thunderstorms occur, torrential downpours are possible, with as much as 30mm of rainfall in an hour and 60mm in three hours.

Hot with driest conditions in the west, thunderstorms in east.
