Zoo accused of painting a donkey, passing it off as a zebra

A zoo in the Egyptian capital Cairo has vehemently denied claims that it tried to pass off donkeys as zebras by painting them black and white.

In the photo, he's posing next to the animal, looking bemused.

In July 2018, a student named Mahmoud Sarhan posted a photograph to social media of what was described as a zebra on display at Egypt's International Garden municipal park.

"We finished our tour then we made a decision to take some pictures".

While different zebra species exhibit significant variability in size, stripe patterns, and snout colorings, their stripes typically do not smudge.

In 2009, a zoo in Gaza painted two donkeys with black stripes to circumvent an Israeli restriction on the importation of animals.

There are smudges on the animal's face.

.

Sarhan's snaps of the donkey-zebra (don-bra? zeb-key?) quickly went viral, prompting vets and animal experts around the world to chip in with their educated opinions that no, that's definitely not a zebra.

This is not the first time that a zoo has been accused of trying to fool its audience.

Mahmoud Sarhan visited the Cairo International Park.

The zoo denied the allegations, with the zoo's director, Mohamed Sultan, insisting the zebras were not fakes. And in 2013, a Chinese zoo had a mastiff dog labelled as a Tibetan lion.
