Mr Nugroho said most of the fatalities and injuries were caused by falling slabs of concrete.

An emergency post was set up on a street in Sembalun to treat the injured because the local hospital was damaged in the quake.

"For supplies, they can still survive for another one to two days", said search and rescue spokesman Agus Hendra Sanjaya.

These include a Malaysian woman and a climber from South Sulawesi province who died in Mount Rinjani National Park.

Deputy Head of Mission Zamshari Sahaharan at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta said they were encouraging all Malaysian who knew tourists in Lombok to contact consular officials.

"The main focus now is on evacuation and rescue".

"Fortunately there was no panic during the quake even though it was quite strong", said Lilis Letisha, receptionist at the Ombak Paradise Hotel on Gili Air island.

Mount Rinjani National Park chief, Sudiyono, said more than 800 tourists were registered to climb Rinjani, an active volcano, when a strong natural disaster rocked Lombok early Sunday.

Located east of Bali and west of Sumbawa, Lombok is part of the Lesser Sunda Island chain.

Triggering a landslide, rocks and boulders cascaded down mountainsides cutting off escape routes for tourists.

Lombok is the next island east of Bali.

Anci, a villager from near the quake's epicenter, told the Associated Press that he and his family spent the night in a makeshift tent, anxious aftershocks could cause more buildings to collapse.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the natural disaster hit about 11:47 Mountain Standard Time with its epicenter located 80 miles northeast of Mataram on the island of Lombok.

Indonesia, an archipelago of thousands of islands, sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismic activity hotspot. The two of the aftershocks after the main quake had an intensity of more than 5.0 on the Richter Scale. In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude natural disaster near Sumatra prompted a tsunami and led to more than 230,000 deaths.

The latest quake was on land and did not trigger any waves or tsunami but authorities issued a yellow alert, suggesting there was a possibility of casualties.
