But 6-year-old Sombra (which means Shadow, in English) is now in so much danger that she's been moved to safer digs at Bogota's El Dorado airport, according to CNN.

Intelligence sources say drug sniffing dog's record success has lead the Colombian cartel to put a 200m-peso ($70,000) price on its head, BBC News reports.

The illegal drugs belonged to the powerful Urabeños, also called the Gulf clan, run by Dairo Antonio Úsuga also known as Otoniel.

"Our German shepherd, Sombra, has participated in nearly 300 operations", Col. Tito Castellanos, the deputy director for the anti-narcotics police, told Colombian news agency RCN. But the latest target for a Colombian gang is definitely very unusual.

Many of these came during her work at ports on the Atlantic coast from which large quantities of cocaine are shipped to Central and North America. With her neon reflective vest, pointy ears and gaping mouth, she looks more like a beloved family pet than a veteran drug-sniffing police dog.

"Sombra is a really friendly, calm dog", Oscar Favian Solarte, head of the anti-narcotics division, told El Tiempo. According to Rojas, Sombra has an incredible sense of smell, beyond that of other sniffer dogs.

Earlier this year she found 10 tonnes of the Urabeños gang's cocaine, and now the group wants her dead. On account of its 245 arrests suspects for drugs.

Since she was transferred in January, the canine sleuth has sniffed thousands of pounds of cocaine out of the dark, helping her handlers find the drug hidden in boxes full of sneakers and wooden necklaces. Sombra can be seen at work in the video below. The dog, a German Shepherd named Sombra, found around 10 tons of cocaine that belonged to the gang, which was seized by police and obviously cost them a lot of money.

According to a USA government report released in June, coca production- the base ingredient for the drug- rose 11 per cent in 2017, has reached an all-time high.
