Eight States Sue to Block Release of Plans for 3D-Printed Firearms

The suit, filed Monday in Seattle, asks a judge to block the federal government's late-June settlement with Defense Distributed, which allowed Wilson's company to make the plans available online.

The company Defense Distributed recently settled with the federal government and announced that files for 3-D printable guns would be posted online starting in August.

The battle dates to 2013, when the State Department ordered Wilson to remove from his website plans for making guns with a 3D printer, saying that they violated export regulations dealing with sensitive military hardware and technology.

"The harm to Pennsylvanians would have been immediate and irreversible", Shapiro said in a statement.

The 3D-blueprints were removed from the site in 2013 because the government said it violated worldwide regulation laws, but eventually surrendered, concluding 3D-gun blueprints count as constitutionally protected speech. 3D printed guns are untraceable and require no background checks; you're basically manufacturing the firearm yourself.

Washington, Oregon, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., are all joining together to seek a restraining order and an injunction to halt the release of the 3D printable gun files. Officials say that 1,000 people have already downloaded blueprints for AR-15 rifles. Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Governor Tom Wolf and Pennsylvania State Police sued to block the company from distributing its 3-D gun designs in Pennsylvania.

Feurer seems to have taken to Twitter to express his anti-gun sentiments.

The lawsuit also says the settlement infringes on states' rights to regulate firearms, therefore violating the Tenth Amendment.

Numerous State Attorneys General are taking action to curtail Wilson's ability to place gun files online.

Defense Distributed has agreed not to allow its websites to be accessed from Pennsylvania. And ARS Technica quoted Ferguson speaking about online gun files, saying, "After nearly 18 months I was skeptical that there was anything else that this administration would do that would truly shock me, but they have". But due to the pending legal battle, Wilson has chose to abide by the cease-and-desist orders, and will not make DEFCAD available in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Los Angeles. But Defense Distributed challenged that effort on Sunday by filing a federal lawsuit in Texas. The U.S. State Department quickly ordered Wilson to remove his plans, arguing that they violated global arms treaties because the plans were in effect distributing weapons across the world.

Neither the company nor its owner, Cody Wilson, responded to requests for comment Monday.

The states sued Defense Distributed, the Second Amendment Foundation, the State Department and other federal agencies regulating weapons.
