Zimbabwe's long-ruling Zanu-PF party won a parliamentary majority in the country's election, causing opposition supporters to take to the streets alleging rigging.

The electoral commission had said it would start announcing results for the presidential race from 10:30 GMT, but this was delayed as commissioners read out more parliamentary results.

Meanwhile, many Zimbabweans have expressed shock at the military firing live ammunition.

Truckloads of anti-riot officers were called in to help clear the streets as tensions escalated.

"The electoral commission failed to meet the mark in a number of ways and the election failed to meet the mark in a number of ways", said Johnnie Carson, a former US assistant Secretary of State for Africa, who is part of an observer mission from the International Republican Institute and the National Democratic Institute.

Chamisa, a lawyer and pastor, yesterday said results had not been posted outside 21% of the country's almost 11,000 polling stations, raising concerns about possible vote-rigging. We've more votes than ED.

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) say Chamisa, 40, has beaten President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his ruling ZANU-PF, "beyond reasonable doubt" after conducting its own count.

"Congratulations to our party Zanu PF for attaining majority of National Assembly seats, with 72 % of declared by the ZEC".

"We have received a confidential report that (Vice President and retired Army) General Chiwenga has ordered the assassination of Nelson Chamisa and myself".

A ZwNews corresponded has witnessed armed soldiers firing live ammunition, beating up people in the streets of Harare as military tanks head into the town centre from Msasa area.

European Union observers on Wednesday said Zimbabwe's elections had several problems, including media bias, voter intimidation and mistrust in the electoral commission and questioned delays in releasing the presidential results, but the EU does not yet know if the shortcomings in the election will have a material impact on the result.

Mnangagwa, a former deputy president who fell out with Mugabe and then took over from him, has said his showing in the election was "extremely positive" while urging people to wait for official results.

There is a growing level of anxiety in the country as many were hopeful that MDC Alliance Presidential candidate would win the contest.

European Union (EU) and USA election monitors have been allowed into the country for the first time in 16 years to assess whether the elections are free and fair.

Dozens of opposition supporters gathered Tuesday evening at their headquarters in the capital, Harare, celebrating in the belief that they had won the presidential election based on results they said they collected from agents in the field. They need a good change.

Chamisa accused ZANU-PF of trying to steal the election.
