Justin Thomas dedicates WCG-Bridgestone Invitational win to ailing Aussie Jarrod Lyle

Nobody has a better scoring average Saturday on the PGA Tour than Tiger Woods, and the Bridgestone Invitational would be a good time to keep that up.

The Bridgestone Invitational, played at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, is one of four invitation-only World Golf Championships events on the tour.

Tiger Woods, an eight-time victor at the Firestone club hosting the Bridgestone for the last time, carded his second straight 73 to finish with a share of 31st.

McIlroy posted a bogey-free 67, with his birdies coming at the second, ninth and 17 on day three, while Poulter's 70 was made up of four birdies and four bogeys.

But back-to-back bogeys from the 13th preceded a double-bogey at the par-5 16th as Day signed for a 73 to share 10th at seven under, while Leishman (73) was a shot back in a tie for 14th.

Of everything Thomas has accomplished in his young career, from last year's FedExCup victory to his triumph at the 2017 PGA Championship, he was missing only a World Golf Championship title from his resume.

He set the tone early by hooking a pitching wedge over a steep lip in a fairway bunker to just short of the green and saving par with a 6-foot putt, then holing a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-5 second.

The impromptu meeting was much more than simply a pep talk, the reigning PGA Tour player of the year doesn't need that.

"I take a lot of pride in how I played today", Thomas told reporters.

"We think this tournament is good for the city, it's good for the Northeast Ohio region, with all the visitors and guests here", said Janelle Lee, from Canton.

"I just have to work on my driver a little bit because it has been quite decent for most of the year, but this week it wasn't". In many respects, it was the precursor to the World Golf Championships by bringing in winners from around the world. Now throw in a sand trap and big ol' tree, and you really lose me. I was so far back that I had to play a great round just to get in the top 10. According to Titleist tour rep JJ VanWezenbeeck, a fitting session with Thomas prior to the Players in May showed the 9.5-degree TS3 gave the reigning PGA champ better ball speeds along with a desirable launch-to-spin ratio.

"Friday morning he was putting [before his round] and I thought he was going to go ballistic".

"The first 10 holes were pretty good", said Johnson.
