At least 39 people have died after a magnitude 7.0 natural disaster struck the Indonesian island of Lombok around 6.40pm Sunday night.

He said the agency was still collecting data on the injured.

Most of Lombok suffered power cuts, local media reported.

Lombok was hit a week earlier, on July 29, by a 6.4 magnitude quake that killed 17 people, injured hundreds and briefly stranded several hundred trekkers on the slopes of a volcano.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.0 quake struck early Sunday evening at a depth of 10.5 kilometres.

Along with some aftershocks, he said there was damage visible but there were no fatalities or major injuries around him.

More than 100 aftershocks have rattled Lombok since the quake, which was also felt on the neighbouring island of Bali.

Rescue officials said much of the damage had hit Lombok's main city of Mataram.

The Garuda Indonesia airline said it was adding extra flights from Lombok to help tourists leave.

Like Bali, Lombok is known for pristine beaches and mountains.

"I was watching TV when I felt a big shake".

His wife Maude, 44, said the family were on Bali for the first quake and Lombok for the second.

"All the activities are shut down".

"When we ran down the corridor, the whole place was evacuating". We got out onto the street and it was just mayhem.

"We were on the fifth floor of the hotel, which is really not where you want to be. Some of them said their own houses had been destroyed but they were still helping us".

A strong natural disaster has struck Indonesia's popular tourist island of Lombok, one week after another quake in the same area killed more than a dozen people. No tourists died on the Gilis, he said.

Singapore's Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, who was in Lombok for a security conference when the natural disaster struck, described on Facebook how his hotel room on the 10th floor shook violently.

"It was quite impossible to stand up. Heard screams", he wrote. And then there was a massive power outage, went dark and then the power came back on within a few seconds. "Lots of cracks, fallen doors", he wrote on Facebook.

There are now nine New Zealanders registered as being on Lombok.

Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton, who has been present at the conference, was safely evacuated from his hotel along with other members of the Australian delegation.
