And in a 2013 interview with news channel RT, Seagal said he believed Putin "is one of the greatest world leaders, if not the greatest world leader, alive today".

"Hard to Kill" action movie star Steven Seagal has been named a special envoy for humanitarian ties to the United States.

On Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Seagal has been appointed to the new role, which will apparently be unpaid.

Seagal's films, which often highlight his martial arts skills, are popular in Europe.

According to the press release, Seagal will also asked to influence matters "in the sphere of culture, public and youth exchanges" between both nations. "I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially". Also that year, California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher credited Seagal with facilitating meetings for a congressional delegation that visited Russian Federation in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings to investigate the suspects' backgrounds and discuss intelligence sharing issues.

The Washington Post was unable to immediately reach Seagal for comment.

Seagal, who has Russian roots, has been a long time supporter of the country, visiting it regularly as he opened a chain of the Planet Hollywood franchise in Moscow in the 90s. Later that month, Putin, who has been described as a fan of the martial arts that Seagal practices in his movies, personally presented the actor with a Russian passport.

Seagal, who occasionally appears on Russian state TV to talk about his views and career, was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station RT as welcoming the appointment.

Actor Steven Seagal speaks at a news conference, while attending an opening ceremony for a research and development center in Moscow, Russia, Sept. 22, 2015.
