The 48-year-old woman and her 39-year-old partner were also convicted of repeatedly raping the boy, now 10, and filming the abuse.

A German mother has been jailed for selling her young son for sex on the internet.

Berrin was sentenced to 12 years and six months by a court in Freiburg, while Christian, the boy's stepfather, was jailed for 12 years.

Six others are accused of being part of the paedophile ring in which the boy was abused.

Prosecutors had demanded a 12-year prison sentence.

The couple must now pay €42,500 (£38,000; $49,200) in damages to the boy and to a three-year-old girl, who was also abused by them.

"A Spanish national received a 10-year prison sentence on Monday after admitting that he had raped the boy on at least 15 occasions and had paid the mother and her partner more than 10,000 euros", DPA reported.

Three German men and one Swiss citizen have already been convicted in separate trials. The court ruled that after serving his sentence, the man must also remain in preventive custody.

Freiburg police chief Peter Egetemaier said that the investigation into the couple had led them to around 20 other people who are now under investigation for child sexual abuse based on confiscated images and video footage.

The case only came to light following an anonymous tip in September 2017.

The couple were found guilty of rape, sexual assault of children, forced prostitution and distribution of child pornography.

In his verdict, Buergelin said Taha went along with the abuse at first so she would not lose Lais as a partner and later "for financial motives".

The case has shocked German society - and local authorities have been accused of failing to protect the boy, who now lives with a foster family.

Case psychiatrist, Hartmut Pleines, quoted by Spiegel news, said the mother's claim that she was in thrall to her partner when she committed the abuse, was false.
