President Donald Trump's Slovenian in-laws became U.S. citizens yesterday through "chain migration", a programme he has repeatedly denounced, in which adult American citizens can obtain citizenship for their relatives.

A lawyer for Viktor and Amalija Knavs said the Slovenian couple took the citizenship oath on Thursday in New York City.

It is believed that Melania Trump, who is a United States citizen, has sponsored her parents for permanent residency.

He said: "It's a dirty - a dirtier word", but added: "It stands for a bedrock of our immigration process when it comes to family reunification".

The first lady's office declined to comment.

President Donald Trump has always been a vocal critic of "chain migration", or the process of giving relatives of naturalized citizens legal status due to their family connections.

The idea that family-based immigration could be labeled as "dirty" might have a lot to do with the Knavs' son-in-law.

President Trump has railed against family-based or "chain" immigration in the past.

The Knavs are frequently with the Trump's and also travel with them. He confirmed that the first lady sponsored their green cards.

The plan, which Trump reiterated last week at a Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania rally, would limit immigrants like his wife to sponsoring only their spouses and underage children to join them in the U.S. - not their parents, adult children or siblings.

The Republican president argues that the system steals jobs from Americans and threatens national security, calling for a merit-based system that preferences more educated, English-speaking professionals.

Typically, naturalisation ceremonies at the Jacob J Javits Federal Building at 26 Federal Plaza are large events, where groups of immigrants are sworn in as citizens en masse, after reciting an oath and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The 48-year-old first lady, born Melanija, changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modeling.

Mr Knavs, who at 74, is two years older than Mr Trump, is thought to have worked as a auto dealer while Mrs Knavs, 73, worked in a textile factory. But the Knavses' lawyer said their ceremony was kept private for "security reasons".

When asked if the couple became citizens through chain migration, Wildes replied, "I suppose".

The couple are natives of Slovenia, where they raised Melania, but have been in the United States for more than a decade, says their immigration lawyer, per CNBC.
