State Of Emergency Declared In Charlottesville For 'Unite the Right' Anniversary Unite the Right: Permit granted for Washington DC far-right rally

Restaurants in downtown Washington, D.C., are taking precautions for the "Unite the Right 2" white supremacist rally planned for Sunday, with some planning to close for the weekend and others educating their staffs on handling hard customers.

Last year's Unite the Right rally ended with violent clashes between marchers and counter-protesters.

On Wednesday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, D, declared a state of emergency, allowing officials to marshal resources to prepare for the potential impact of events in and around Charlottesville and northern Virginia. He admitted there were many lessons to be learned from last year's violence in Charlottesville.

Law enforcement and D.C.'s Mayor Muriel Bowser stood shoulder-to-shoulder Thursday touting lessons learned from previous year and patrolling other controversial demonstrations.

Last year's Unite the Right rally resulted in the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, as well as Virginia State Police troopers Lt. H. Jay Cullen, III and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates.

The city is closing downtown streets and public parks and restricting access to a downtown "security area", where visitors are prohibited from wearing masks or carrying certain items, including skateboards, catapults, glass bottles, bats and knives.

Murphy also said at Monday's meeting that he chose to deny the remaining pending permits the previous Friday for a recreational fair-style "Festival of the Schmestival" event in Market Street Park on Saturday due to safety concerns. He also did not mention a white nationalist demonstration planned for Sunday in the capital.

The increased police presence is meant to serve as a "deterrent to anyone who would want to come into the community and exercise their First Amendment rights in a way that would violate someone else's First Amendment rights", Brackney said.

Murphy also chose to close the City Market Aug. 11 due to public safety concerns in the downtown area.

Counter-protests: There are several counter-demonstrations planned.

Initial plans were for Kessler's group to assemble at the Vienna Metro station in northern Virginia and take Metro to Foggy Bottom, then march to McPherson Square. I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence.

With regards to the security area downtown, law enforcement personnel will man two entry points for pedestrians seeking to enter the security area.

Organizers for Sunday's event have called it a "white civil rights rally" aimed at protesting "civil rights abuse in Charlottesville".

Authorities are bracing for the anniversary of last year's white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Many business owners have said the plan is too restrictive and will cost them significant revenue on what would normally be a busy summer weekend.

"We want to see students, activists and members of the global community rising up to fight fascism in their universities, local communities, and all institutions that uphold white supremacy and fascism", Majuto said. "This also from the president who, on time after time after Charlottesville, said, 'There are very fine people on both sides'".
