The body of Shanann Watts, a pregnant Colorado woman, whose husband authorities suspect of killing her and their two daughters, was found in a shallow grave, according to court documents revealed Saturday. Krista Henery, a spokeswoman for the Weld County District Attorney's Office, said the formal filing of charges is not expected until at least Monday.

Authorities separately announced that the Weld County Coroner's Office had performed autopsies on Friday and confirmed the bodies as 34-year-old Shanann, 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste Watts.

Chris Watts' daughters who he allegedly smothered to death.

Details about what led police to arrest Watts late Wednesday night on suspicion of three counts of murder and tampering with evidence likely are to be revealed next week. Shanann's body was found at the oil and gas refinery where Chris worked in Colorado. "Law enforcement recovered the bodies of Defendant's two daughters from inside oil tanks located near the grave of their mother".

Earlier this week, Watts' told reporters he had no idea where his family could be, and he pleaded for their safe return.

Chris Watts' defense attorney, James Merson, filed two motions Friday, requesting DNA samples of the girls' throats, suggesting his two daughters were strangled, 9NEWS reported based on court documents it obtained.

He has been kept in protective custody at the jail, where he is being held without bond, because of the publicity surrounding the case.

Christopher Watts, 33, was sacked on Wednesday, the day he was arrested, Anadarko Petroleum said.

Shanann Watts painted a rosy portrait of her family on Facebook, calling her husband and the father of her two young daughters her "rock" and writing that he was "the best dad us girls could ask for".

Eikelenboom, who also recommended taking DNA samples from the girls' hands and the hands and nails of their mother, has testified in several high-profile trials, often on so-called "touch DNA", cases in which small samples of genetic material are left on a surface.

"This is absolutely the worst possible outcome that any of us could imagine", said John Camper, director for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, in a press conference Thursday.

'I came home and it was like I walked into a ghost town. Investigators found the bodies of Bella and Celeste nearby.

Defense attorneys did not say why they made those requests.

'I don't know what to think about this.' Shanann wrote above the photo, adding two laughing-tears emojis. "Then I met you!" she continued.

"Right now I don't want to throw anything out there. It was very vague", he told reporters.

She described the situation as "a horrible, horrible, horrible story" that has "affected all of us whether you do know them or don't know them".

Shanann's friend, Amanda Thayer, said she left everything, including her phone, wallet and handbag, inside the house.
