Ayanna Pressley, a Boston city councilor who ran as a progressive activist, ousted 10-term Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano Tuesday in a Massachusetts House primary.

Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley greeted family, friends and supporters after beating Rep. Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District.

Pressley is likely to become the first black woman elected to Congress from MA in November, since there are no Republican candidates in the race.

Democrats need to pick up 23 seats to take a majority in the House of Representatives, and two to take control of the Senate, if they are to serve as an effective foil to Trump's agenda. "She will serve the district well in Congress". She's now slated to be Massachusetts' first-ever African-American congressmember.

Pressley told her supporters her win was a shot across the bow not only of establishment politics but of the Democratic Party itself and demonstrated a desire for governing that is "bold, uncompromising and unafraid". The race for Capuano's seat was less about policy issues than representation - Massachusett's 7th Congressional District is the only one in the state with more non-whites than whites. Pressley enjoyed an endorsement from Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Republican Gov. Charlie Baker - both heavily favored to win re-election - both got general election opponents.

An African-American woman pulled off an upset victory in a Democratic primary contest against a 10-term entrenched male incumbent in Boston, the latest sign that insurgent U.S. candidates from the left are gaining ground.

On Tuesday night, the socialist tweeted that she "bonded" with Pressley "over running while constantly told it's "not our turn, ' that we 'weren't ready, ' 'good enough, ' or 'experienced" enough".

"With so much at stake in the era of Trump, tonight's results make clear what Ayanna Pressley knew when she boldly launched her campaign against a ten-term incumbent: Change in the country and Congress can't wait", said Jim Dean, chair of the liberal group Democracy for America.

Ayanna Pressley, now serving on the Boston City Council, beat the 10-term Democrat in another big Democratic upset. Her win comes at the tail end of a primary season in which black politicians have made a series of advances.

"Many would just say: Your job is the vote".
