Blamed for the death of a Florida baby and intense wind and rain that pummeled parts of the northern Gulf of Mexico coast, Tropical Depression Gordon weakened Wednesday but still spread bands of heavy rains across a swath of the South as it swirled over central Mississippi. Forecasters predicted total rain amounts of 4-8 inches (10-20 centimeters) in parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL. National Weather Service offices in Missouri and Oklahoma said Gordon's remnants could add to the rain caused by a frontal boundary already causing heavy rains in parts of the Midwest. We'll have to keep an eye on rain totals because this system will certainly produce heavy rain in parts of in but we should wait another 12-24 hours before we can confidently say just where.

Gordon is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 2 to 4 inches over portions of western MS, southern and western Arkansas, and from western to northern Missouri into adjacent parts of IL with isolated maximum amounts of 6 inches through early Saturday. After landfall the storm will continue west north-west as it dissipates, but should be bringing more rain and winds into the county later Thursday, although rainfall is expected throughout the week with slow-moving thunderstorms. The Escambia County Sheriff's office posted on its Facebook page that responding deputies discovered the child had been killed.

On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, 12 casinos that were ordered closed Tuesday were given permission Wednesday to open at noon. It wasn't almost as bad as when Nate, the last hurricane to strike the US, came ashore last October in nearby Biloxi, Mississippi. Tens of thousands of customers spent part of Wednesday without electricity.

Governors in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana all declared states of emergency to better mobilize state resources and National Guard troops for the storm. Workers on at least 54 oil and gas production platforms were evacuated.

Mayors of barrier islands in the storm's path had warned that their communities might get cut off from the mainland.

Even as Gordon's coastal threat faded Wednesday, the hurricane center was also tracking another storm far out in the Atlantic.

"It's the peak of hurricane season", Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.

"If you are less than 3 to 5 feet above sea level (in the warning area), you need to get away from that water, especially up those rivers, because that's where that water will be going", CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.
