President Donald Trump claimed in an interview that there are "100 pictures" of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and former FBI Director James Comey "hugging and kissing each other".

And the special counsel left open the possibility that he may still try to press Trump in person about a second piece of his investigation: whether the president has sought to block the probe since taking office.

"He's Comey's best friend", Trump said of Mueller, who's investigating possible collusion between his campaign and the Russian government.

Currently, Mueller's team and the president's legal counsel are still discussing whether or not Trump will speak with Mueller. The president's lawyer Jay Sekulow told the Times that the conversation was still ongoing. According to Woodward, Trump seemed surprised by Dowd's reaction and asked, "You think I was struggling?"

"The tone of the letter and the fact that the special counsel did not ask for written responses on obstruction prompted some allies to conclude that if an interview takes place, its scope will be more limited than 's legal team initially believed", The Times wrote.

The letter was the latest in lengthy negotiations that the two sides have engaged in about whether Mr. Trump will be formally interviewed in the investigation.

Another area of interest to Mueller's office is whether Trump tried to obstruct the investigation, but it was not clear how any possible questions on that subject might be handled.

As Vox explained in an earlier article, Mueller is only required by law to deliver a final report to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who will ultimately decide whether to release any or all of Mueller's findings to Congress or the public.

Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump's lawyers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "Kavanaugh actually has a long résumé", including a decade as a federal judge and years as a lawyer in the George W. Bush White House", Trevor Noah said on Tuesday's Daily Show.

The Special Counsel sent a letter to Trump's lawyers that said he would accept written responses on queries about whether the president conspired with Russian Federation to interference in the presidential election, according to The Reuters.
