They allege Papadopoulos thwarted an ongoing national security investigation and contributed to them losing track of Joseph Mifsud, the professor who knew about the "dirt" on Clinton, before they could effectively question him.

Trump has denied knowing anything about contact with Russians and his campaign.

He has testified that senior campaign members encouraged him during 2016 to build ties with Russian Federation, including after he told them that Moscow possessed - and could be willing to share - dirt on Trump's election rival Hillary Clinton. "It was at best, begrudging efforts to cooperate". He was also ordered to pay a fine of US$9,500. "He was riding very high, as Mr. Papadopoulos said to me himself, he had just come from the inauguration of the president of the United States".

Papadopoulos' mother Kiki, aunt Maria and father Tony spoke to CNN as they exited the hearing. "I'm sure you're wondering what comes next", and that he was impressed by his words to the judge.

Moss said he thought Papadopoulos' remorse was genuine. "I would have preferred less time in jail, but that's OK". Mifsud left the United States and not returned, after the Federal Bureau of Investigation found him in the US on February 11, 2017, about two weeks after Papadopoulos's first interview.

His mother said on Friday that she "still supports" Trump.

The special counsel's office prosecutors want a more substantial sentence and have asked the judge for up to six months of prison time, which would fall within the court's guidelines for his crime.

"Judge said he believed Papadopoulos was genuinely remorseful but didn't agree to a probation sentence because he needed to send a message about the seriousness of lying to the FBI", Cheney wrote in a subsequent tweet.

The only other defendant in the Russian Federation probe who has been sentenced is Dutch attorney Alexander Van der Zwaan.

Papadopoulos, who was initially interrogated on January 27, 2017 by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents regarding his work for the Trump campaign, was arrested at Washington-Dulles International Airport on July 27, 2017 and arraigned the following day.

"No offence, but he was unsophisticated, he was naive and he was foolish", Breen said in court.

Papadopoulos had told investigators that the conversation happened before he became a Trump campaign adviser, when in fact he had worked for the campaign for more than a month at the time.

Papadopoulos has never publicly named those within the Trump campaign he told about the offer of emails from the professor, but he has said he was in regular touch with campaign chairman Paul Manafort, campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and other top campaign officials. They noted that he and his wife appeared frequently in the media to discuss the case. Lawyers for Papadopoulos had requested probation, saying he lied not to impede investigation but "to preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master".

"As far as I remember, I absolutely did not share this information with anyone on the campaign", Papadopoulos told Tapper.

The court filing also suggested that both Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions approved of his outreach to Moscow, contradicting Sessions' sworn testimony.
