US Open 2018: Djokovic marches past Millman into semi-final

He said he had never sweated as much and echoed Federer's comments about a lack of air in the stadium, saying it was a problem the tournament needed to address.

The structure was completed in 2016 so this year has been Djokovic's first proper taste of the changed conditions since then, and he was less than impressed.

It was first played at the U.S. Open in 2005, but did not have a match in Arthur Ashe Stadium until a year ago.

Because whether it's night or day, we just don't have air down there.

It was a very unusual match, with Djokovic nearly losing his cool after receiving two warnings for time violations, ultimately losing a game for it.

The pair, both shy characters, have recently become friends, and Nishikori said: "I hope people were watching us today".

For the men, the humidity means packing 10 or 11 shirts to keep up with the sweat and changing shoes on court, as Dominic Thiem did in his epic four-hour, 49-minute quarterfinal loss to Rafael Nadal.

The sixth-seeded Djokovic was far from his best, but ultimately he didn't need to be to defeat the 55-ranked Millman, who fought gamely and entertained the crowd with his hustle and grit. Millman broke Djokovic's serve just once, whereas Djokovic broke Millman's serve four times.

Keys, the runner-up to Sloane Stephens previous year, took her record over Suarez Navarro to 4-0 thanks to a break in the ninth game of the first set and sixth of the second.

It's the first time in Grand Slam history that such a break has been offered to the men.

He'll be facing Kei Nishikori, who upset Marin Cilic to advance to his third career Grand Slam semifinal - all three coming in the US Open.

Few would have predicted such a remarkable season for Djokovic, who lost in the fourth round of the Australian Open, underwent surgery on his right elbow and fell at the first hurdle in Indian Wells and Miami on his return.

Osaka celebrated her win calmly and coolly unlike the floods of tears which greeted her last-16 victory over Aryna Sabalenka. On two occasions, Millman raced back from the net to deep behind the baseline to make retrievals that shocked Djokovic, who blew the point both times.

He could not find a way back into that set but he made Djokovic work very hard for it, and the Serbian's frustration levels increased during the second set as chances came and went.

The hot and humid conditions, which left Federer out of breath, took their toll on Djokovic who looked sluggish early in the second set. Millman saved five break points, even survived two straight double-faults.

It was already 85 degrees (29.4 Celsius) outside of Arthur Ashe Stadium about a half hour before the opening quarterfinal match between No. 20 seed Naomi Osaka of Japan and Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine.

"It's great to see, " said Nishikori, who is into his third major semifinal - all in NY - but is still in search of his first Grand Slam trophy.

It's another scorching hot day in NY and that means the extreme heat policy is back in effect for the third consecutive day at the U.S. Open.
