"We recommend that you contact your bank or credit card provider and follow their recommended advice".

Shares of British Airways' parent company IAG fell around 4% as markets opened on Friday morning, hours after the airline said the credit card information of at least 380,000 customers had been "compromised" in a data theft.

The nearly two week long hack did not involve travel or passport details, the airline said, adding that it had launched an urgent investigation into the theft of customer data.

Customers who bought tickets from British Airways in the past few weeks may have had their personal information stolen, the airline said on Thursday.

The airline said the incident has been resolved and all systems are working normally.

The BBC reports that, based off British Airways' revenue for the year 2017, the maximum penalty imposed for this breach would be about $634 million. The airline also reported the incident to the police.

Air Canada has said credit card data was encrypted and protected from a breach but Aeroplan numbers, passport numbers, birth dates, nationalities and countries of residence could have been accessed if users saved them in their account profile.

It immediately contacted customers when the extent of the breach became clear.

In the U.S., Delta Airlines said in April that payment-card information for several hundred thousand customers could have been exposed by a malware breach months earlier. "There were other methods, very sophisticated efforts, by criminals in obtaining the data", he said.

We are deeply sorry for the disruption that this criminal activity has caused.

"Atrocious that I had to find out about this via news and twitter", he tweeted.

The NCA is set up to tackle the most serious and organised crime posing the highest risk to public security in Britain.
