Russia Registered Rocket Launches From French Frigate in Mediterranean

Fears Israel or France has shot-down Russian spy plane during raid on Syria Russia Registered Rocket Launches From French Frigate in Mediterranean

A Russian military plane vanished over Syria's Mediterranean Sea coast, authorities said Tuesday.

The official SANA news agency said the Technical Industry Institution in the state-controlled city had been targeted.

In recent weeks, Russian officials have repeatedly said that rebels in Idlib were preparing a chemical weapons attack that could be blamed on the Syrian Government and prompt a retaliatory strike by the West. Eight were discharged shortly after being admitted to a nearby hospital.

Syrian air defense forces may have accidentally shot down a Russian Il-20 Coot electronic intelligence aircraft during an attempt to respond to apparent Israeli air strikes against targets in Syria's coastal Latakia governorate.

While the Russian military said it recorded four F-16 Israeli jets over Syria at the time of the attack on Latakia, the IDF has refused to comment on the report.

On Sept. 17, 2018, CNN, citing an unnamed USA government official, reported that the US military believed Syrian surface-to-air missiles had brought down the Il-20.

U.S. military officials believe Syrian forces accidentally shot down a Russian aircraft, according to a CNN report published on Monday.

He said the site on the eastern outskirts of Latakia belonged to government forces, but added it was unclear whether the depots were being used by regime troops or those of key ally Iran. Reports from Idlib indicate that Al Nusra has set up gallows in the province to hang anyone supporting a peaceful settlement with the Syrian government.

This month, Israel acknowledged having carried out more than 200 strikes in war-ravaged Syria over the past 18 months, mainly against Iranian targets.

The port city of Latakia is home to the family of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and a bastion of loyalty to his regime. What is certain is that the explosive geopolitical conflicts concentrated in the struggle in Syria are threatening to erupt into a far wider regional and even world war.

The attack on Latakia comes just two days after Israel launched airstrikes on the Damascus International Airport, destroying hangers that reportedly contained weapons, as well as, according to some accounts, an Iranian Boeing cargo plane.

During the Israeli cabinet weekly meeting on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country will "constantly taking action to prevent our enemies from arming themselves with advanced weaponry".
