Sadiq Khan claims London's police are preparing for "civil unrest" after Brexit

Britain is to due to leave the European Union at the end of March, but Khan warned the country now faces two "incredibly risky" options ― both of which could have devastating impacts on the economy and people's living standards.

Both sides have tried to "de-dramatise" the issue and are sounding more upbeat that a deal is in reach.

Now the plan being discussed in Brussels is understood to involve a similar emphasis on technology to avoid the need for a "hard border".

May has proposed that Britain follow European Union rules in trade in goods after Brexit, to protect manufacturing supply lines and avoid a "hard border" between Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland. "It's our job as the government to make sure we make a success of no-deal, just as we make a success of getting a good deal", she said.

The prime minister will try to persuade her continental counterparts that her Chequers plan does not present a threat to the single market over dinner on Wednesday.

However, the plan faced criticism from within her own party, and triggered the resignation of Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who recently referred to her plans as a "suicide vest".

Checks could also be handled away from the border using "trusted-trader schemes", according to the report.

Reuters reported on September 12 that European Union officials were working on a sensitive Irish protocol to the draft Brexit treaty with Britain, as part of what Barnier has called efforts to "de-dramatize" the issue and get a deal.

No new border plan will materialise before the Conservative Party conference on September 30-Oct 3, the diplomat said.

"A future prime minister could always choose to alter the relationship between Britain and the European Union".

Trade Secretary Liam Fox said on Sky News that the Prime Minister is "doing a great job in hard circumstances", and that supporting her "is in our national interest". Other Indian-origin pro-Brexit MPs, including Rishi Sunak - the son-in-law of Infosys chief Narayana Murthy, and Goan-origin Suella Fernandes had joined Patel in signing an open letter in the lead up to the Brexit referendum making similar arguments on immigration, which marked one of the most contentious issues in the Brexit debate.

"We have now reached a position where there are two outcomes as a effect of the government's negotiations", the Labour politician said.

One note said: "The biggest unsolved problem is Northern Ireland".

The intervention in favour of a second referendum from Khan, a senior member of Britain's opposition Labour Party, will put more pressure on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to also support the second referendum idea.

The government is set to publish its detailed immigration proposals in the coming months, which is widely expected to be a general toughening of stance on controlling the numbers that come into the country in line with the Conservative party's target to reduce migration.
