China is attempting to "meddle" in the forthcoming USA mid-term elections, President Donald Trump told world leaders during a meeting at the United Nations on Wednesday.

"Regrettably, we found that China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election", Trump said.

Earlier in the day, Trump accused China of interfering in the US midterm elections as a way to undermine his aggressive trade policies.

In China, some headlines in official media contrasted what they called Trump's "crazy talk and accusations" with the "indifference" of China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Trump did not provide any evidence for his allegation, which he made while chairing the Council meeting.

Donald Trump has accused China of election meddling during an appearance at the United Nations.

Trump then quickly pivoted to Syria, saying, "I want to thank Iran, Russia and Syria for, at my very strong urging and request, substantially slowing down their attack on Idlib province and the 3 million people who live there".

"I think it's trying to maximize pressure on the administration to change its trade policies toward China by attempting to show White House and Republicans that they're going to pay a price with the mid-terms", said David Skidmore, a political science professor at Drake University.
