KL Rahul was disappointing, Rahane fell after getting a start, Kohli is unbeaten on 72 but the day belonged to Shaw. In the third session, Kohli and Rahane stitched a 105-run stand to take the team past 300.

Shaw and Pujara, who came one down, however, maintained their calm and punished the bad deliveries to complete half-centuries.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Friday hit his 24th Test Century and surpassed former Australian skipper Steve Smith (23) to record the most number of Test hundreds by an active player.

Shaw, at 18 years and 329 days, reached the historic three-figure mark off just 99 balls at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

He becomes India's second youngest century-maker after Sachin Tendulkar, who in 1990 was 17 years and 107 days when he scored 119 not out against in England in Manchester, but that was in his ninth Test match. His innings was laced with 15 boundaries. Unfortunately, Shaw fell at the stroke of tea, in what was a soft dismissal as he chipped one straight into the hands of leggie Devendra Bishoo. Shaw (134 off 154) and Cheteshwar Pujara (86 off 130) laid the foundation for a big score with a 206-run partnership after the early loss of K L Rahul (0). He also produced a delightful straight drive on way to reaching his half-century which came off 56 balls.

More importantly, Shaw had the confidence of several hundreds under his belt when he walked out to bat for India Thursday morning.
