Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, 98, spoke about the Kavanaugh nomination on Thursday in Florida.

By the time of his retirement in 2010, Stevens had served on the Court longer than all by two justices in the nation's history and rose to lead the Court's left-wing faction, despite having been appointed by Republican president Gerald Ford. Former justices do not normally comment on pending Supreme Court nominations, and Stevens is the only living former justice to comment on whether Kavanaugh should be confirmed. In "Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution", Stevens lauded the younger judge for a ruling he issued regarding political contributions.

The 64-year-old was agreeing with sentiments earlier expressed by Kagan suggesting that the exit of Kennedy could mean the reputation of the Supreme Court suffers. In the past several weeks, he has been accused of engaging in gang rapes and sexual misconduct dating back more than three decades - claims that he has denied and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in a supplemental inquiry concluded earlier this week, could not corroborate.

Associate Justices of the Supreme Court Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor said they are concerned the court's legitimacy could be undermined if it is viewed as politically divided.

"At that time, I thought (Kavanaugh) had the qualifications for the Supreme Court should he be selected", Stevens is quoted as saying.

Stevens said "there's merit" to the criticism that the testimony demonstrated a potential for political bias "and I think the senators should really pay attention to that". "I feel his performance in the hearings ultimately changed my mind". In his retirement, he has called for the Second Amendment to be repealed.

The presence of O'Connor and Kennedy "enabled the court to look as though it was not owned by one side or another and was indeed impartial and neutral and fair", Kagan said to an audience at Princeton University.

Kagan, the first female dean of Harvard Law School, said the relationships between the justices is supportive: "We always know everyone is acting in good faith". However, that changed when Dr. Christine Blasey Ford publicly accused him of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers.

Kavanaugh had spent more than three years working for Ken Starr, the independent counsel who investigated Democratic President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.
