Toyota Motor Corp is recalling 744 Prius hybrid cars in Singapore, as part of its global recall of 2.4 million vehicles over a system issue that can lead to stalling.

Toyota said in a statement that the recalled vehicles-2012-2014 Toyota Prius and Toyota Prius V models-were created to enter a failsafe driving mode that cuts engine power dramatically if their engine computer systems detected a serious fault. See the chart below.

The problem identified arises when the cars fail to enter 'failsafe driving mode as intended'.

"While power steering and braking would remain operational", Toyota says, "a vehicle stall while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of a crash".

Should this occur, the auto could lose power and stall, although functions such as the power steering, brakes and lights would still work.

If a vehicle was to stall at high speed, this could increase the chances of a auto crash occurring.

Toyota Australia said it would contact all affected auto owners to advise them to book into a Toyota dealer to have the software fixed free of charge.

It also said that although it had received three reports in Japan related to the issue, it was unaware of any crashes in the country.

Toyota has sold more than 12 million hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles globally, including the Prius, since 1997. A Toyota official told BBC that the issue would be fixed with the help of a software upgrade spanning over 40 minutes.

It's thought that vehicles sold in China, Africa, Oceania and other regions are also affected by the recall. Friday's is the second Prius recall in the last month.

Toyota has issued several recalls in the past over issues including faults with floor mats, breaks and airbags.
