Meng Hongwei, who was also a vice minister of public security in China, has been accused by the Chinese government of accepting bribes and committing unspecified other crimes.

Interpol also received Meng's resignation as the worldwide body's president soon afterwards. It did not say why.

Beijing has acknowledged that Meng is in detention "under the monitoring and investigation" of the new anti-corruption unit, the National Supervision Commission, for suspected serious violations of state law, The Guardian reported.

Vice President Kim Jong-yang will take over as acting president until a election can be held at Interpol's next general assembly in November 2018, the statement said.

In a truly extraordinary sequence of events, Interpol has announced the resignation of its president after he "disappeared" while in China two weeks ago, only to later be confirmed as detained and under investigation by Chinese Communist Party officials.

Interpol says it has received the resignation of Meng Hongwei, the Chinese president of the worldwide police organisation who went missing one week ago.

Grace Meng delivered the information to reporters from her hotel room in Lyon, France. Interpol has acknowledged reports about Meng's disappearance, and said in an email that it "is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China".

Speaking in Lyon, the southeast French city where the worldwide police organisation is based, she said the last social media message she received from her husband came on September 25, depicting a single knife emoji.

She was moved to contact authorities after she received a final text message with a knife emoji and instructions to "wait for my call". But she said she hasn't heard from him since then and does not know what happened to him.

Meng's unexplained disappearance in China, which had prompted the French government and Interpol to make their concerns known publicly, threatened to tarnish Beijing's image as a rising Asian power. He was head or deputy head of branches of the coast guard, and in 2016, he was elected Interpol's president. She said he was in China when he sent the message.

Grace Meng asked journalists not to show her face as feared for her own safety and the safety of her two children.

This photo shows the last message sent by Meng Hongwei to his wife, Grace Meng.

It was unclear how Meng, the first Chinese national to lead Interpol, could have fallen foul of the Chinese authorities. "For the husband whom I deeply love, for my young children, for the people of my motherland, for all the wives and children's husbands and fathers to no longer disappear".

China is now in the sixth year of a vast anti-corruption campaign launched by President Xi Jinping that has netted thousands of officials and business executives.

Earlier, his wife, Grace Meng, told journalists she thought he was in danger.

Fearing for her safety, she spoke with her back to reporters and refused to be photographed.

The Chinese effort to track down corrupt officials overseas, known as Operation Fox Hunt, has led to claims in some countries that Chinese law-enforcement agents have been operating covertly on their soil without the approval or consent of local authorities.
