Right-wing Brazilian Congressman Jair Bolsonaro is headed toward a second-round runoff against leftist former Sao Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad on October 28, according to exit polls and early results that indicate no candidate winning a majority in Sunday's presidential election. He said he was confident he had the majority of valid votes necessary to clinch the race without a runoff vote on October 28, avoiding a showdown with the leftist Workers Party (PT).

Haddad, the candidate for the Workers' Party (PT), who was selected to replace Lula Da Silva on the ballots in September after a court barred the convicted former leader from running, received 29 percent of the vote.

Voting Sunday revealed the deep divisions generated by Bolsonaro and Haddad. The 55-year-old mayor of São Paulo and former education minister has worked to appeal to working-class Brazilians who remember Lula's government as a boon to social programs and living standards.

Mr Bolsonaro obtained 46.7 percent of the votes in Sunday's first-round vote, while Mr Haddad, the stand-in for jailed ex-President Luiz Inacio da Silva, got 28.37 percent, the president of the country's top electoral court said on Sunday.

Mr Bolsonaro told his audience that he was their only option to end the corruption, crime and economic stagnation gripping Brazil.

The final numbers showed a steady increase in Bolsonaro's support in comparison to the last opinion polls.

Some voters - particularly women - carried "Not Him" placards to polling stations in opposition to Bolsonaro.

Lula, who founded the Workers Party and was president until 2010, is serving 12 years in prison for a bribery conviction. He reportedly said to a female congresswoman, publicly, that he would not sexually assault her because she was not worthy of him. The north-eastern states, however, all voted for Fernando Haddad, of the Worker's Party, or the centre-left candidate, Ciro Gomes.

"We've had enough of corruption".

But Brazil is split over what cost to its democracy it may pay if it chooses Bolsonaro, a long-time congressman who has repeatedly praised the 1964-85 military regime but now vows to stick strongly to democratic ideals, a conversion many question.

At a news conference afterward, Haddad cast the second round as pitting Bolsonaro's "neoliberalism" against the social programs that the PT has promoted.

Nearly two-thirds of the electorate are concentrated in the more populous south and southeast of Brazil where its biggest cities, Sao Paulo and Rio Janeiro, are located - and where Bolsonaro holds a commanding lead.

Brazil's next Congress was also elected on Sunday, and in a seismic shift, Bolsonaro's once-tiny Social Liberal Party (PSL) was poised to become the second-largest force in the body.

"We expected to win in the first round", 77-year-old retiree Lourdes Azevedo said in Rio de Janeiro.

Thirty parties won seats in the lower house, up from 25 represented there before the vote.

"We'll speak with anybody who wishes to talk with us now, which is interesting because many of them did not want to have a dialogue with us before the first-round vote", Lorenzoni said.
